HOWARD PELLER | ARTIST & FARMER

My personal aesthetic has always centered on my passion for objects made by hand, using materials that are closely related to the environments in which they are made. This concept of “living and making” allows me to take inspiration from the nature that surrounds me and create products that both sustain me and the environment in which I am working. I am proud to craft, direct, design, and market handcrafted products for the tabletop, gift, and home décor marketplace for over 30 years. View my cross-discipline creative portfolio here.

Making products that have living value is my connection to the willow grove. The seasonal rhythms of nurturing the crop pairs the sustainability of its harvest with the crafting of objects from it; the traditional hand skills involved with soil and toil are able to resonate in the woven products which are created from that labor. My Process

My learning to weave willow traces a path involving international projects, apprenticeships, and workshops. I intensively studied weaving at the basket school located in Lichtenfels, Germany, which provided a basis for understanding the feeling and the various traditional techniques of working with willow.

As a designer and artist, I appreciate the nature of what can be made, how it is used, and the connection it has to the people who value an object of beauty and utility. From the willow groves here at Living Willow Farm, I strive to offer this connection between the agrarian and the artisan in both finely crafted woven objects and living willow structures.
